A “motivational” story about a 70 years old working 12 hours per day to earn rm100(equivalent to Usd20.87 today) to support his wife and two unemployed son.

“Age is just a number” should not be used to justify people needing to work to survive at 70!

Somebody start the revolution. It’s time to eat the fucking rich. I’ll get the plates.

This is always better than “eat the rich”. Because everyone means it metaphorically, until some edgy idiot says “duh I mean literally let’s eat them huh huh”, and then any meaningful call to action gets lost.

IMHO we should build systems outside government control (like Lemmy), but at least slaughtering the rich is something people might realistically do.

Working on something cool well past ‘usual’ retirement age because you like your work and want to stay active to stave off brain rot - cool. My dream really, I can’t sit still.

Working until death a demanding, soul crushing job for peanuts because you have to survive and support your dependants - inhuman. Dont @ me.

Why the fuck isn’t one of his unemployed sons drive other people’s shit around for twelve hours a day instead of him?

    • The article doesn’t mention any issues with them healthwise, which I expect they would have if there were any, considering the perseverance angle, so I think it’s safe to assume they’re lazy assholes.

My parents are in their 80’s and driving for DoorDash.

You can’t convince me that the Democrats and Republicans have accomplished anything meaningful when I have to see that day in and day out.

My dad is in his 70s and started driving for Uber/lyft. It really bummed me out when I heard this—and it’s not because he’s retired and wanted some extra cash. He never retired and this was his best option—in his eyes. He thinks no one is hiring old men like him. I don’t know if that’s even true. But it bums me out.

In a functioning society a 70+ senior shoul be able to not have to work. He should not have to feel like ha have to be hired.

        It’s true.

I tried to help my dad find a day job before they started doing this. What employer wants an 80 year-old when they can get a cheap, young person?

Oh but minimum wage being just a number, that’s different

It being just a number is a problem. Minimum wage should be a function: its output depends on inflation that we’ve introduced to the economy since minimum wage. (And IMHO, in part because of it)

That feels right for aboringdystopia, but wouldn’t it even fit better for the orphan crushing machine?

The fuck? Send the little shits off to work or kick them the fuck out, the article didn’t mention anything about them having some life crippling issues
