I have updated the post on data.gov.my dashboards after they added new datasets for the public to explore. This time, it’s about ridership information for Rapid and KTMB services, or basically our country’s main companies for public transport.

That’s not all; their data catalogue page also feature total trips taken on a particular line/service. There are some missing data that hopefully will be added in the future, such as:

  • Total trips for other KTMB services, like Komuter for Central Sector.
  • Station-to-station ridership for Putrajaya Line, aka MRT2.

The URL I linked for this post shows ridership data between Bandaraya and Masjid Jamek stations on the Ampang Line. I picked this because if you’ve not heard the news, the elevated section between these stations had structural problems, so services between the two stations have been suspended since late January 2023. Currently, trains still run between Bandaraya and Sentul Timur terminal (6 stations cut off from the rest of Ampang Line), and a dedicated bus line run between Masjid Jamek and Bandaraya.

I was expecting 0 ridership data between the two stations from February 2023 onwards, but it wasn’t zero. It was up to double digit in a month, perhaps due to rail staffs moving in between. Train cars still have to occasionally move through the damaged viaduct section to replace the running stock that service the 6 cut-off stations (there’s no depot after/at Sentul Timur).

If you have time, you can also explore ridership from Masjid Jamek (AG07) to AG05…AG01, or Bandaraya (AG06) to any stations except AG01 to AG05. My guess is there are residual data that indicate staff movements. Let me know if you find clean zero data for the combination above. According to RapidKL’s latest press release on the matter, train service between AG06 and AG07 should resume mid-October 2023. We shall see by then.
