    Want to hear some BS?

    I wanted to watch a show that’s on Netflix and Hulu.

    Started with Netflix. They don’t have all the episodes.

    Went to Hulu. Their app wasn’t showing subtitles correctly.

    I went to pirate it. And it just fucking worked.

    What the fuck.

    I have to pirate the prime video shows even though I have amazon prime. It just won’t let me watch at more than 480p because I use the evil LINUX.

        tl;dr: You download files from a server you pay to access. Faster and more secure (assuming you trust the server host).

        I use Eweka and NZBGeek as my indexer. If you don’t have access to fancy private torrent networks then this is a much less painful experience than having to navigate torrent sites these days. Combine with *aar and life is pretty sweet.

            They’ll sometimes have issues but I haven’t ever heard of an actual attack against any of them.

            You’ll need a Usenet server but at least two is preferable - one following DMCA and one following NTD.

            Then you’ll need indexers. There’s no limit on these that you’ll want. Each will have different content and you can use some services to track how often you actually get good results from them or how much overlap there is.

            Then get a download client. I like SABNZBd.

            After that, you can automate it. Sonarr is gold standard for TV shows and Radarr for movies. Lidarr exists for music but it’s pretty hard to automate good music since there are so many different versions - radio edits, DJ, live, samples, remixes, etc.

            Best part about Usenet is that it’s much easier to get what you want. With Torrents, you’re relying on seeders for each file you’re downloading. These mostly end up being newer media and usually the shittiest quality someone can produce (looking at you, YIFY).

            With Usenet, it’s all coming from the servers. If it’s been uploaded, it’s almost always still there and you can usually download it as fast as your Internet connection allows. Sometimes you’ll find missing parts, almost always due to either DMCA/NTD requests or because the uploads were old and not downloaded recently enough. The former is the reason I recommend at least two servers. However, you’ll still usually have multiple other versions of that file uploaded elsewhere. If you’re using Sonarr/Radarr, they will mark it as a failed download and try another matching item instead.

          It’s very sweet. Gonna through DrunkenSlug in as well. I’ve used geek, eweka, slug, and abnzb. I currently use geek and slug. Eweka is also great, just didn’t re-up. Abnzb is meh.

        What? I’m in 3 private torrent trackers, and have usenet also and 90% of stuff I grab with *arr software are from usenet, even stuff that’s new/releasing rn have best releases on usenet.

        Only way torrent is better is if you get into those super private trackers but otherwise usenet is still better in my case.

      While there, pick up some books. I stumbled into my library 2 years ago and picked some books up. Got sucked into exzessive smartphone use before that and could barely read more than 10 minutes without getting restless or sleepy. Took a while to recondition myself to just sitting in a chair and reading but it‘s so much better than endless scrolling.

      Fuck the endless barrage of subscription services. Imma just sit in me chair, read me book and torrent the occasional movie.

    Hi, if you want to set up a safe, fully-automated streaming service that you can connect to from any device, reach out to me. The only cost to you is the VPN and hard drives if you already have a computer.

    You can have your own media server that automatically downloads all the new episodes of shows you want across all streaming services, and your friends and family can even request movies/shows they want to see from a web UI and those will also be automatically downloaded. All using free and open source software. Completely ad free.

    Anyone here that also knows how to set this up should also offer to help others, as it is pretty much the only way to break free from streaming services.

      I don’t have the knowledge to do this reliably as I do not have the money for my own setup. But I do offer free Linux support! :D

        Sure. If you are comfortable with computers, this should be a breeze. I currently use Docker as my server platform, which can run on top of any OS you want, but I run it on debian. I run a Gluetun container + Mullvad for VPN, qBittorrent as the torrent client, Jellyfin for media, Jellyseerr for user requests, Sonarr for TV management, Radarr for movie management, and Prowlarr for torrent indexers. All of these run on separate docker containers. There’s some trickiness for getting all the sketchy traffic going through the VPN, but there are plenty of guides out there, and in DMs I’m willing to offer support, albiet pretty slowly. If you have used Plex in the past, you can replace Jellyfin + Jellyseerr with Plex + Overseerr and the rest of the system can stay the same (although plex has been making some weird moves lately, and isn’t free or open source, so I’d stick with Jellyfin if you can get past a relatively ugly UI).

        The nice thing about this setup is it’s pretty easy to expand to music, ebooks, and audiobooks as well, but for those media types there is less automation for user requests. I haven’t had any issues with scaling up either, I’ve currently got 150+ TB of media.

      Presumably this is radarr/sonarr, which I can definitely vouch for if it is. Absolutely awesome, but since I’ve been using stremio with real debrid I haven’t found the need for them anymore.

        I agree that Stremio is probably best for less tech-savvy users, but I prefer recommending open source over proprietary, free over paid subscriptions, and self-hosted over relying on some company to remain in service. I also prefer having local copies of my media so that I don’t lose anything to no seeders on old media. Of course, there still is a cost component for me, I have to buy hard drives and maintain the server myself.

        However, I just want people to move off of streaming services, so if you can help others with a streamio + real debrid setup, please do!

      All kidding aside, AppleTV os the goat. Very little slop (unlike netflix), varied content (unlike Amazon), no endless pointless sequels and spinoffs (unlike Disney+). I hate apple, but credit where it’s due, AppleTV rules.

        For two very important reasons. Apple doesn’t make shit, they don’t sit in the writers’ room, they don’t produce, they don’t interfere with the creation of their originals on any level. They buy IP rights and then hire experts to do all the work.

        The second reason is Apple is spending more per episode of their originals than anyone else, including Netflix.

        Sanctity of the creative process and a whole lotta money will get you very good content.
