I believe there’s a certain degree of alienation from institutions that breed apathy and mental shortcuts. When voting feels so removed from your material reality, and things seem to get better/worse almost randomly, voting for a person thousands of miles away who has no idea who you are or what you need boils down to vibes.
I have a problem with representative democracy, but mass direct voting wouldn’t change a lot, even under a socialist state.
