I’m so stressed out by this framing because it concedes the right-wing notion that NEP is because hak melayu when it’s very specifically about the fact that because poverty is racialized the poverty eradication track will inevitably produce socioeconomic gains by ethnic group. Arghggggghhhhhhhhhhhhbbhhh

Affirmative action intends to address societal economic inequality that has an added dimension of identity eg race, sexuality, gender. If he wants to do something “needs-based” then take off his reformist badge and just admit he’s a market neoliberal - that would at least make him more daring than UMNO has been in ages.

i hate how conservative Malays think a fucking economic policy as if it’s some kind of entrenched right when it isn’t.

yes, hak bumiputera is in fact enshrined and entrenched in the constitution but i wished they knew that as with most constitution, it’s strictly aspirational and it’s written so the courts can give it full effect in the future IF a case comes up.

he’s better off setting up a social security organisation and give cold hard cash as payment for those that’s down on their luck. if you actually give them money you could actually change their quality of life. Even RM100-200 a month goes a long way for many poor families even in today’s economic climate.

I’ve always thought one of the more unfortunate consequences of hak being translated as both right as privilege and right as remedy is this erosion of meaning
