As someone who’s been through the loss comic in real life, multiple times, it’s pretty fucked everyone uses it as a meme. It’s a miserable, soul crushing experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone. And that’s from the perspective of the father. I can’t begin to imagine the emotional pain my wife was in.

The gaming webcomic that it was a part of had already run for years, focused around 1-dimensional characters making low-brow jokes and silly violent scenarios centered within mid-2000s “randomness”. Suddenly, in 2008, the creator releases Loss, a manipulative, tone deaf strip about one of the worst physical and emotional traumas imaginable, shocking readers and earning infamy. Basically, it’s a meme because it’s so fucked. It’s why people who share it only refer to the work superficially by name or pattern, rather than by content, almost like a tragedy.
