Criticism of the Chinese government is sometimes warranted …
How is it “criticism of the Chinese government” if Australians view their own country as the most influential power in the Pacific Islands?
Australians also think they are more influential than the U.S. according to the poll. Is it also criticism of the U.S. then? Should we rate limit such posts because they don’t reflect Australian-U.S. relations, especially as there is much more criticism of the U.S. since the Florida man is at the helm?
Which country would you like to migrate to?
This has nothing to do with the economy in the first place, but it is a good point to reduce dependencies.
Canada increased military cooperation with Australia in the Indo-Pacific already in 2024, the EU is seeking a new defence alliance with Australia. And so did South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and a lot of others with shared values.
As an addition: Nato is not destroyed. Canada and the EU partners will have to rethink its cooperation, but this is what they have already been doing for some time. Australia is certainly one partner in this new global security architecture.
The World Is Abandoning Survivors of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence—We Must Not Look Away
In an op-ed, Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Feride Rushiti calls on the world not to abandon survivors of wartime sexual violence as cuts to survivor services in Kosovo threaten to erase decades of progress in justice, healing, and dignity for victims.
Normally I wouldn’t post a Fox News link, but this is funny. Canadian-born actor William Shatner snarked live on TV about the Trump plan of Canada becoming the 51st state and called on PM Mark Carney to make a counter proposal.
Shatner: “Do a real estate deal! Make a counter offer! Let’s offer — Canada offer — to the United States to be the eleventh province! Think of the joy! … It’s the best thing!”
Fox News host Jesse Watters [laughing]: “He should have said that. … That would have brought the house down.”
Shatner: “I mean, everybody is so serious about what is an un-serious offer … Canada’s been around for a hundred fifty years …”
Watters: “Isn’t it about persistence? … “Carney says, it’s not for sale … Trump says never say never …”
Shatner: “At a certain point, persistence becomes insulting!
Here is the Fox News link to the video (Shatner appears at ~3 min).
Most of you may know this already: https://buycanadianmart.ca/
Addition:
Canadian retailers are seeing a surge in domestic sales amid the ‘Buy Canadian’ movement – (April 2025)
The “Buy Canadian” movement is already delivering promising results across the retail sector. Major retailers such as Loblaws Companies have reported a 10 per cent increase in sales of Canadian-made products. Sobey’s parent company Empire also noted a decline in sales of U.S.-sourced goods.
Importantly, the shift isn’t limited to big retailers or headline product categories. Smaller retailers and established brands are also seeing tangible benefits.
It may not be surprising, but when I read the headline I thought exactly the same :-)

What does ‘dishonest’ mean in this context?
Your comment supports exactly what I said. I have been here on Lemmy for only a short period of time, but I have been observing that whenever one posts an article critical of China, this user gets whatabouted to death (and sometimes called “idiot”, “F@ing liberal”, and other names). One user here in this thread even asked me whether I support the war in Israel (!) - because I posted an article on China “building a cyber army of hackers.”
What is this?
Such behavior is so widespread here on Lemmy that I argue it must be orchestrated, this doesn’t rise up organically. And it appears to be supported not only by users but also by many admins and mods.
I will stop responding to this kind of comments, btw. This is off-topic and leads to nowhere.
This is somewhat on topic:
We “destroyed” Greens: Megamillionaire disinformation group “Advance”
The group that ran the “No” campaign against the Indigenous Voice to parliament — funded by the Liberal Party and fossil fuels multi-millionaires — claims to have “destroyed” the Greens.
In an email titled “BREAKING: Greens destroyed by Advance blitz”, US-style disinformation group “Advance” has claimed its “critical work” had “helped stop the Greens in their tracks”.
“The Greens have been belted,” Advance executive director Matthew Sheahan writes in an email.
He states the group’s so-called “Greens Truth” campaign “cut them (Greens) down from six seats to at most two. Maybe one” …
As a response to several of the posts in this thread: It is really amazing how many people here on Lemmy are downplaying or even denying China’s crimes (even many admins and mods). You can post articles critical of the US, EU, Australian or any other government, but if you post a China-critical text you are whatabouted to death. The tonality of many of these comments alone is very telling.
“These biases stem from entrenched gender patterns in the training data as well as from an agreeableness bias induced during the reinforcement learning from human feedback stage.”
No surprise.

Quick question also to you: Do you fundamentally disagree with what Israel and the US are accused of but fully support China’s domestic surveillance, transnational repression, supression of free speech and freedom of the press, bullying of its neighbours, aggression against Taiwan, just because they are perpetrated by “the good guys”?
'China has almost doubled their aggression in cyber’, experts say
Today, Western governments have been more outspoken in linking China to cyber attacks and sanctioned organizations linked to malicious cyber activity. Despite this growing awareness of the threat posed by China-backed groups, … people still don’t have a firm grasp on the extent to which China has infiltrated enterprise systems …

I personally think that this organised campaign is somewhere else here on Lemmy, it’s more about these .ml communities, no?
But that’s just the opinion by some random guy on the web.
