Please use this post to share suggestions and feedback on everything to do with monyet.cc. Constructive criticism is super welcome!

If you’re seeing this on the frontpage: FYI the purpose of this is to be a long-term suggestion box on the sidebar. But in the short term we’d love your input as to how you’re finding monyet.cc so far!

Hi, just got caught up with this. Honestly, no worries at all. Experiments are welcome and mistakes will happen! Not everything will work and that’s fine. Heck, this whole project is an experiment. Thanks for being transparent about your thought process and taking ownership of things. I thought it might be good to address your points anyway, for you and other future readers:

      1. Hogging: I initially had this concern too, but I’m starting to feel this may be fine in practice. There’s many ways to name most things, e.g. r/trees on reddit. Plus we’re small; if someone gets silly and tries to namesquat, we can always just reach in and undo this, or reclaim unused subs. Let’s see how this goes.

      2. “Barons”: Yep there’s circles of people who have hung out for years here. On the daily thread, on the Discord, the mod team, etc. But FYI they’re very porous circles. And you mostly “get in” by contributing regularly over time. We’re always starved for people willing to chip in care / work / brains / goodwill to build things over long periods. Like @imaginelizard has shared analytics skills on the annual subreddit survey for many years, and bootstrapped the news subs here. But @Naomikho is a new face!

So we really do welcome people stepping up and contributing. That said, we constantly coordinate / compromise / give-and-take to help ensure we pull together, and towards good results for the whole community. E.g. lizzy recently put one plan on hold, in order to flow better with the main sub (thanks again!). One general principle the mod team also uses internally is our “votes” carry less weight if we’re not actively contributing, so there’s no “landed gentry” here.

      3. Diversity: We’re still figuring this out but IMO we need to balance two priorities here. Subs are better when they have more members. So it’s good if we can try to put more wood behind fewer arrows, i.e. grow a few solid subs as a team sport. But it’s also great to have people trying all kinds of stuff and building new things!

Ultimately we all win if our shared house is both lively and pleasant. We haven’t got clear answers yet, but after some discussion we’re starting to suspect our role as admins will involve some coordination between subs, so that we all play together nicely for the benefit of the whole.

Thanks for sharing your concerns! (And thank you for listening to my TED talk lol)

I’m glad we could help! And I hope you find ways of enjoying the site and contributing if you can. Please do ping with feedback any time! (Though we won’t always reply quickly, IRL is quite busy these days)

Thanks for the feedback! I think we need to be clearer about creating community from the get go but i think we missed the train, and also doesn’t feels like making people read through guideline just so they can have a community of their own. Doesn’t matter, it’s all in the past now. What i felt is important is moving forward, us admin will not interfere any conflicting/duplicating community, and we trust the community creator will solve the conflict with due diligence.

Anyway, i’m looking forward for your contribution to the mandarin community!

Food communities: I think three different people have suggested this now. I think this is really great. But which works best?

    • Today I ate
    • Today I cooked / Suami masak apa hari ini
    • Restaurant hunting / recommendations

My suspicion is the first one hmm. Also, any better name ideas than !makan?

Hmm, maybe have people just use tag like [Today i ate], [today i cooked/baked], and [reco] in front of their title? And make it all under Makan or Food. (i think english would be better in case visitor from other instances wanna find malaysian food recommendation)

I really like this btw! If we have a single !food for everything, we can gradually figure out what people enjoy doing and branch out.

I feel like [today I made] would be a good catch all phrase! today i cooked bread would sound funny xD but just a minor thing tbh

Yalor, but i do feels like it’s just guideline lah, [i cooked] for culinary and [i baked] for pastries. But [i made] also can haha, i’ll add it to the guideline later

Hmm just to share an idea while briefly visiting. What do you think of having one thread per day for sharing “today I ate’s”?

        • That way it won’t take up a ton of posts on the frontpage if everyone starts doing it
        • Plus it’s more cosy, I saw feedback elsewhere that it felt weird making a whole post for random lunches. I kinda agree, it might be fun for people to share their everyday casual meals (not the fancy cooking / restaurant stuff), but it feels a bit intense to post that to the frontpage
        • And there’s this minigame aspect of like, whose lunch/dinner “won” the most votes today which is quite fun
        • Plus it’s much easier to build a little habit of scrolling through everyone else’s food shares and commenting socially, if it’s all within a single post. Like “lunch gang”, keeping track of diets, etc
        • Hmm also might build a nice separation between casual low-stakes food posts, and all the other kinds of food posts

Just sharing the idea btw, super welcome to not do this. Annnd I’m out, still in crunch. (More time this weekend)

Edit: Oh and thanks so much for setting up the sub!!

Well… The information for SPM brought me to r/Malaysia in the first place, and I saw some concerns over loss of info regarding that, so maybe? Asides from that, I just want to say I’ve browsed through most of the communities and it feels like I’ll continue to use this instead of reddit Malaysia, feels comfy here even if there’s not much people. (I think it’s mostly because politics has its own thread and it isn’t jumbled up together with other wholesome or fun stuff, quite a nice break from all the news honestly)

Sure thing! Lemmy doesn’t have a wiki yet, but looking at the vast interest in Lemmy and relatively rapid development, we’re confident that there will be a wiki feature soon so I can migrate the sub’s core resources to Lemmy too.

There needs to be more of a push to move r/Malaysia to monyet.cc

Currently the content and interaction suck on both because mods crippled r/Malaysia and monyet.cc hasn’t caught up yet

Edit: OK I take that back. The content on monyet.cc doesn’t suck so much because I used to use it for news. And since stormy is doing his thing I guess it’s alright. But interaction is lacking severely. It’s like no one got the memo to move or can’t be bothered. Seems weird seeing we have like 300K+ members on r/malaysia

Interesting take! Hmmm I’m not confident that we’re ready to try moving everyone over in bulk yet. I am hearing a lot of noise from less technical users. And I’m finding Lemmy really is still quite rough around the edges. Especially around end user polish, federation to main subs, etc. My concern is that if we force things, we could lose 80% of the userbase in the transition. But love to hear other thoughts.

Have assembled a post specifically for us to think through our future direction – currently pinned!

    Possible issue:

One of the communities in my subscriptions are not getting “synced”, i.e. clicking on the community doesn’t show any feed. The community is !cybersecurity@sh.itjust.works . The other communities on sh.itjust.works work fine.

What’s the way to load a foreign community again? I’ve been trying to load /c/fediverse@lemmy.world but I keep getting a 404: couldnt_find_community error message. Is it because of version mismatch or something?

I’m trying to follow advice of moving my subscriptions from my lemmy.world account to one on a smaller instance (i.e. this one) but I can’t do that if I can’t load those communities here.

definitely used the correct syntax in the search box. I’m getting no results for the exact community@instance form but I get results from other instances if I drop the @instance part.

edit: the guide asked me to wait. I’ve been waiting for days.
